About Ohio

One of the most popular American states is the Midwestern one of Ohio as it’s quite diverse when it comes to landscape and culture. It’s the seventh most populated state with about 11.5 million people and is ranked 34th when it comes to total area. The capital city is Columbus and the greater metro areas of Cleveland and Cincinnati are the most populated. Ohio became the 17th state admitted to the Union back in 1803. Some of the other major cities are Akron, Dayton, Columbus, Toledo, Canton, Euclid, and Youngstown.

Ohio is quite picturesque as the northern region of the state is situated on Lake Erie and has several major waterways flowing through it, such as the Ohio, Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland Rivers. It’s also filled with scenic rugged hills and forests. The weather’s generally good as the summers are hot and humid and the winters are mild to cold.

If you like amusement parks, then Ohio’s going to seem like a paradise as there are several excellent ones to choose from. Two of the best are

Sandusky Cedar Point near Cleveland and Paramount's Kings Island, close to Cincinnati. If you prefer to check out some indoor attractions, then head on down to the United States Air Force Museum in Dayton, as it’s one of largest and oldest aviation museums on the planet.

Northern Ohio is also well known as the home to many Mennonite and Amish families and you can see them enjoying their way of life on their farms and in the small towns. If you visit Appalachian Ohio, you’ll be able to see a variety of interesting, exotic animals as they roam free at the 10,000 acre endangered species reserve known as the Wilds.

Driving into the state and around it isn’t bad at all as the interstate and highway systems are both above par. If you’d like to fly in, there are major airports in Cleveland, Dayton, Akron, and Columbus, as well as various smaller ones spread throughout the state. As for rail service, Amtrak has stations in several cities including Toledo, Cleveland, Sandusky, Elyria, and Cincinnati. Cleveland also has a pretty good mass transit system to get around town.

There are plenty of hotels and motels to choose from in Ohio and you’ll find accommodations to fit all travel budgets. The same thing goes for restaurants as there are all kinds, serving both regional and international cuisine.

Most of the action takes place in Cleveland, which is an excellent city to visit as it sits on Lake Erie and offers some beautiful architecture as well as top-class bars, clubs, and restaurants. One of the trendiest areas to visit is the Warehouse District. It’s also the home of the popular Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

When it comes to sports, Cleveland’s the main place to be again as you can find major league baseball, football, and basketball franchises there along with a minor league hockey club. The city is also known to host some pretty good world-class boxing cards and UFC events from time to time. Cincinnati also has major League baseball and football teams to entertain the fans and Columbus has an NHL hockey team as well as a MLS soccer franchise. There are also quite a few minor league teams in the state.

Ohio’s diversity means there’s something for every traveller, no matter how old they are or where their interests lie. It’s an excellent mix of small-town America and big city life.
